The Level 3 Outdoor First Aid qualification (16 hours) is accredited by the awarding body ITC First.
This qualification is designed to meet the needs of those working away from immediate assistance (more than 30 mins) in the remote and rural regions of the UK.
It is suitable for people working or spending recreational time in rural and remote settings and will maintain the license to practice for those with outdoor National Governing Body Instructor awards, such as Mountain Leaders, Climbing Instructors, Ski Instructors, Mountain Guides, Paddlesport Instructors, Mountain Bike Instructors, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Leaders, Horse Riders, Geography Field Trip Leaders and Forest School Leaders.
The course also meets the requirements of the Institute for Outdoor Learning (IOL) Statement of Good Practice for Outdoor First Aid Training at Band 3.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The Level 3 Outdoor First Aid qualification covers the following:
- Roles and responsibilities of the first aider
- Minimising risk in an outdoor emergency situation
- Safe accident procedures including primary and secondary casualty survey
- Safe airway positions
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use of AEDs
- Dealing with choking
- Managing a casualty in seizure
- Treatment for bleeding and shock
- Dealing with catastrophic bleeds and use of torniquets, military dressings and haemostatic dressings
- First aid for burns and scalds
- Appropriate first aid kits and outdoor equipment
- Managing fractures and dislocations in the outdoors
- Managing pelvic injuries
- First aid for sprains and strains and soft tissue injuries
- Serious head injuries including concussion, compression and fractured skull
- Manging a casualty with a suspected spinal injury
- First aid for a chest injuries including broken ribs and open chest wounds
- First aid for eye injuries
- First aid for poisoning
- Dealing with a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
- Medical emergencies, including, heart attack, strokes, diabetes and asthma
- Hypothermia and hyperthermia
- First aid for bites, stings and outdoor related infections such as Lyme’s Disease
- Triage and incident management
Assessment is continual throughout the course. There are many practical scenarios to practice and apply skills in an outdoor setting. This course is valid for 3 years.

Course Duration & Assessment:
The training and assessment typically consists of a two day (16+ hour) course.
Students are assessed continuously by tutor observation of ‘real-life’ skills in a friendly and supportive way. There are no written tests to complete at the end of the course as the outcomes are assessed by demonstration of practical first aid in our fun and interactive outdoor scenario-based approach throughout the two days day.
This certificate is valid for three years and certificate renewal is by completion of another outdoor first aid course.
